Poland’s vision for European Security
DATE: October 3, 2023 6:00 pm
LOCATION: The Center Club
Long before Russia invaded Ukraine, Polish leaders singled out Russia as the primary threat to the nations of Eastern Europe. They increased the national defense budget, acquired powerful military equipment, and raised the country’s profile in NATO by denouncing Germany for cozying up to Moscow. So, when Russian forces crossed into Ukraine in February 2022, Poland was poised to assert a leadership role in opposing the invasion. It sent main battle tanks, artillery warplanes, and many other weapons to Ukraine. Now Poland aspires to have one of the strongest armies in Europe, putting it in the top tier of NATO countries.
What is Poland’s vision for European Security? We’ve put the question to Polish Ambassador Marek Magierowski, and he graciously agreed to be our next Distinguished Speaker.
Ambassador Magierowski is a journalist by training, having served as a reporter, editor, and columnist in some of Poland’s top publications, among them Rzeczpospolita (The Republic) and Gazeta Wyborcza (The Electoral Gazette). In addition, he was an editor for the Polish edition of Newsweek. In 2015, he went into government service as head of the press office of the Chancellery of the President, and later Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. His first diplomatic post was Poland’s Ambassador to Israel, and Washington is his second. He’s a graduate of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan with a degree in Hispanic Studies and is fluent in seven languages.
This in-person presentation will be hosted at The Center Club in downtown Baltimore. The member’s reception starts at 5:15pm with a cash bar, and the program will begin at 6:00pm. We’ll also make the presentation available on a Zoom live feed for those who cannot attend in person.
