The Russian-Ukrainian War in Perspective

DATE: May 28, 2024 6:00 pm

LOCATION: Zoom

Event information

Michael Kofman, one of America’s leading experts on the Russian military and the Russia-Ukraine war, will be our next guest in the Distinguished Speakers Series.

We will do this as a sit-down discussion, and as always, we will welcome questions from our members. To catch up on the latest developments in the Ukraine war, please check out the BCFA Ukraine blog, which carries daily updates from multiple sources.

Michael Kofman is currently a senior fellow in the Russia and Eurasia Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, focusing on Russian military and Eurasian security issues. Prior to joining Carnegie last year, he served as Director of the Russia Studies Program at the Center for Naval Analyses, where he conducted research on the capabilities, strategy, and military thought of the Russian Armed Forces.

Kofman is also a Principal Research Scientist at CNA, an Adjunct Senior Fellow at the Center for a New American Security, and a Contributing Editor at War on the Rocks, where he hosts The Russia Contingency, a bi-weekly podcast on the Russian military and war against Ukraine. He previously served as a program manager and research fellow at the National Defense University. Past fellowships have included the Modern War Institute at West Point, and the Kennan Institute at the Woodrow Wilson Center.

Mr. Kofman last addressed the Council in May 2022, when he gave a riveting analysis of the Russian military’s “shambolic” performance in the invasion of Ukraine and the video attracted more than 20,000 viewers.  This time he will take a broader look at the war more than 800 days after the Russian invasion to answer the questions: “What are Ukraine’s prospects for recovering its territory now that U.S. military aid has resumed?” and “How much have the Russians improved their operations since the invasion?”
